Massachusetts Remembers: United We Stand

As the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, learn about this year's commemoration at the State House, our updated teaching resources, and the heroes with ties to Massachusetts who perished in the attacks.

• Remember the 2,977 people who perished on that day, including 219 with connections to Massachusetts.

• Honor the heroic roles of flight crew members, veterans and first responders.

• Unite as one to share our memories of that horrific day with the more than 100 million young Americans – 37% of the population – who are too young to remember the events of that day.

This solemn anniversary will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, September 11th, on the Massachusetts State House steps with a Name Reading ceremony to memorialize the 219 people with ties to Massachusetts killed in the terrorist attacks.

There will be a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time that American Airlines Flight 11 was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.

The Commemoration will adjourn to the House Chambers at 10 a.m. for addresses from family members and a keynote speaker, a ceremony to honor the 2026 recipient of the Madeline “Amy” Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery, a Remembrance Montage, and a song performed by the granddaughter of a 9/11 victim, accompanied by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

The commemoration will conclude with a wreath-laying ceremony led by Mayor Michelle Wu and members of The Massachusetts 9/11 Fund’s Family Advisory Committee at the 9/11 Memorial in the Boston Public Garden at 1 p.m.

Keynote and Family Speakers, Musical Performers

Maj. Gen. Jonathan Treacy, who led Otis ANGB air defense response to 9/11 attacks, to give 25th anniversary keynote

The Massachusetts 9/11 Fund is proud to announce that Air Force (Ret.) Maj. Gen. Jonathan Treacy, who was the commander of the 102nd Fighter Interceptor Wing at Cape Cod that provided the initial air defense response to the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, will be the keynote speaker during the 25th Annual Commemoration in the State House Chambers on September 11th. He will also be reading the names of veterans who lost their lives on 9/11 on the State House Steps earlier that morning.

Tracer, as he is known to fellow fighter pilots and ground crews, also led the 102nd through two subsequent combat deployments to Southwest Asia: Operations Northern and Southern Watch. He served as the Joint Staff's Deputy Director for Antiterrorism and Homeland Defense, as acting Director of Staff for the National Guard Bureau, and Commander, Joint Task Civil Support, U.S. Northern Command's Standing Operational Joint Task Force.

Family members to speak at 25th Annual Commemoration

In addition to Maj. Gen. Treacy, 9/11 family members will also speak during the Commemoration in the State House Chambers, including:

• Teresa Mathai and Christie Coombs, Mass 9/11 Fund Co-Founders, on the evolution of the Mass 9/11 Fund and the National Day of Service.

• Pat Bavis, Mass 9/11 Fund Education Chair, will give an overview of the new PBSLearning Media Education Resources launched across the nation this spring that are now available to 17 million students.

• Laura Ogonowski, daughter of American Airlines Flight 11 Pilot John Ogonowski, will discuss memorials and remembrance.
