Free Legal Services

The members of the Boston Bar Association have offered to provide free, confidential legal services to residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who were directly impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

  • These services may include:
  • Assistance obtaining death benefits.
  • Assistance obtaining death certificates.
  • Estate tax assistance.
  • Financial Planning.
  • Initial Consultations.
  • Preparing estate plans for surviving members.
  • Probate administration.

All members of the Boston Bar Association who are assigned to a victim's family have agreed not to accept fees of any kind in exchange for their services.

Free Financial Advisory Services

The members of the Financial Planning Association of Massachusetts have offered to provide free, confidential financial advisory services to residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who were directly impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In order to assure the quality of the services provided, only licensed Certified Public Accountants, Certified Financial Planners, Chartered Financial Consultants (ChFC), and Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) will provide services to victims' families. All financial advisors who participate in this program will be required to attend a day-long training session alerting them to the unique issues which may be common among victims' families.

The services provided may include:

  • Budgeting and Forecasting Services: Helping families plan a secure financial future.
  • Evaluation Services : Helping families identify all assets, and liabilities, sources of income, and financial objectives (retirement, children's education, etc.).
  • Federal Victim Compensation Fund: Helping families quantify the costs and benefits of participation in the Federal Victim Compensation Fund.
  • Investment Advisory Services: Evaluating family portfolios and recommending investment strategies.
  • Tax Advisory and Return Preparation Services: Helping families understand tax obligations and prepare and file state and federal income tax and estate tax returns.

All members of the the Massachusetts Financial Planners Association who are assigned to a victim's family have agreed not to accept fees of any kind (whether hourly or commission-based) in exchange for their services.
