Other Massachusetts Commemorations in 2012

Many 9/11 family foundations and other organizations and communities throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts hold thoughtful commemorations on the anniversary of 9/11. These are the 11th anniversary events we are aware of.

Battleship Cove, Fall River, September 11

Battleship Cove is a maritime heritage museum dedicated to preserving the world's largest collection of historic naval ships. It is also home to five National Historic Landmarks and the Commonwealth's official veterans memorial for World War II and the Korean, Vietnam, and Persion Gulf Wars, and the official 9/11 Memorial. In honor of the eleventh anniversary of the nation’s most deadly domestic attack, Battleship Cove will conduct a Rite of Reflection remembrance ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial site with a wreath casting following by a 21-gun salute. The ceremony is open to the public.

Remembering Jeff Coombs, the Abington husband and father of three who was killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Jeff Coombs Memorial Road Race, Walk and Family Day is a 5k run and walk that features free food, many children’s activities, a DJ, music and raffles. The event typically attracts more than 1,000 participants. There are awards for the many age categories, and a stroller division. The event benefits the Jeff Coombs Memorial Foundation, a 501C-3 created to assist families across Massachusetts who are affected by death or illness or other circumstances that challenge the family emotionally and/or financially. The Foundation also assists military families through grants and special programs, including a holiday party for up to 400 family members that was featured in the December issue of Family Circle Magazine.

The event takes place at the Woodsdale School in Abington. You can register on line at www.coolrunning.com and www.racewire.com. Forms are also available on the foundation website, www.jeffcoombsfund.org. Registration fees are $20 for adults, $15 for students and $5 for children under 12 if received by Aug. 25. T-shirts are not guaranteed past this date, and fees for registrations received after Aug. 25 increase by $3 each. Call Christie Coombs at 781-982-1608 for more information.

McGinty Scholarship Family Fun Day, Foxboro, September 8

The event honors Michael McGinty, a Foxboro resident. Over the years we have raised enough money to award scholarships to deserving high school students who are active in community service. Many have already graduated from college and some are now even married. We know they will go on to make a difference in their communities. These young men and women have shown that they have the same love of community service as Mike had before his untimely death. Please join us for music, magic, games, craft's, balloon art, face painting and raffles, food by Loewen's Deli and a great day of family fun to benefit the McGinty Scholarship Foundation.
